What are head lice and Nits?
Head lice are tiny insects that live on the scalp. Nits are lice eggs cemented to hair shafts. Head lice infestation is very itchy and extremely contagious. They are very small and move quickly from light, therefore making it very hard for us to find them.
How does it affect me?
Head lice affects around 10 – 12 million children in America every year. The main season for head lice is at the beginning of the school year, August through November.
Due to the “No Nit” policy, most camps and schools will send home any child that has lice.
How do we get lice, and how can you tell if you have lice?
Head Lice are transferred by personal head-to-head contact and also through contact with personal items such as combs, scarves, hats, headphones, and bed linen. Scratching is the main way to tell that you might have lice, but especially if the itching occurs behind the ears and near the neck.
